MERRILL - Joseph A. Trottier "Tom," 79, of state Route 374, Merrill died Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, at CVPH Medical Center, Plattsburgh, N.Y.
Born in Campbellton, New Brunswick, Canada on Aug. 17,1929, he was the son of Albert and Violet (Paskell) Trottier. They predeceased him.
Mr. Trottier attended and graduated from Lyon Mountain High School in 1947, where he was active in sports. He attended Plattsburgh State University and graduated in 1954.
He went on to teach elementary and junior high school in science and mathematics at Hadley Luzerne Central School and Saugerties Central School, where he was elementary science coordinator for two years. At Hadley Luzerne Central School, he was president of the Teachers Association and taught for 21 years, retiring in 1984. During this time he received National Science Foundation grants and attended Cornell, Union, Auburn University, Franklin and Marshall and University of Maryland receiving a master's degree in science.
He was married to Bernice Baker on Aug. 21, 1981, in Malone, N.Y.
Mr. Trottier is survived by his devoted wife of 27 years; five children and their spouses: Michele and Anthony Sardina of Clermont, Fla., Michael and Karen Trottier of Lake Luzerne, N.Y., Donna Trottier and Bernard Mudd of Hadley, N.Y., Jeffrey and Laurie Trottier of Hadley, N.Y., and James and Nancy Trottier of Greenwich, N.Y.; two stepsons, Charles Shatraw of Merrill and Robert Shatraw of Brunswick, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
A calling hour will be held at St. Bernard's Parish Center, Lyon Mountain on Friday, Feb. 6, from 10 to 11 a.m.
A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. in the parish center with the Rev. Ted Crosby of St. Bernard's Church officiating.
Donations in his memory may be made to American Cancer Society or Fitzpatrick Cancer Center, Plattsburgh.
