Lake Luzerne - Elizabeth "Betty" J. Moses of Lake Avenue, died Friday evening, Sept. 19, 2008, at Glens Falls Hospital. She was 82.
Born on Feb. 1, 1926, in Hadley, she was a lifelong area resident and daughter of the late Peter Gardner and Ettalene Shaw Burnham. A graduate of Hadley-Luzerne High School, Betty married James H. Backus in 1941. James died in 1973, and in 1975, she married Wayne Moses, who died in 1977. After 22 years of working in school lunch service, she retired in 1973.
Betty enjoyed yard sales, breakfast at the local diner where she could visit with her many friends, and tending to her African violets and Christmas cactus, one of which she had for almost 40 years.
In addition to her parents and her husbands, she is predeceased by a son, James P. Backus; three brothers, Peter, Richard and Robert Burnham; and two sisters, June Burnham and Marion White.
She is survived by her son, Richard D. Backus and his wife, Diane, of Lake Luzerne; her daughter, Bonnie Mitchell and her husband, Robert, of Hadley; a daughter-in-law, Gladys Backus of Jonesville; grandchildren Richard Backus of Hartford, Ted and Bill Backus and Angie Watkins all of Lake Luzerne, Steven Backus and James J. Backus of Queensbury, Cindy Chandler of Milford, Pa., Deborah Wells of Corinth, Nancy Granger and Dennis and Michael Mason all of Hadley; her sisters, Dorothy Carpenter of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Mildred Waite of Hadley; 23 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
At Betty's request, there are no calling hours.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at the Rockwell Falls Presbyterian Church in Lake Luzerne. Betty's grandson, Rick Backus, associate pastor of Hadley Luzerne Wesleyan Church will officiate. Refreshments will follow in Jeffers Hall at the church.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
