Harmful algal blooms, also called cyanobacteria, are impacting water bodies across New York State.

Cyanobacteria are photosynthesizing bacteria naturally occurring in the environment, but some produce toxins harmful to people and animals. Multiple water bodies in Washington and Saratoga counties have documented these blooms. 

State and local officials, educational institutions and businesses are working on ways to combat these toxic blooms. Institutions are also researching what makes some blooms toxic.
