David Reynolds, the chief deputy for the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, announced Tuesday he plans to run for sheriff in this fall’s general election.
Reynolds, a Westport resident, will seek the Republican ballot line as he vies to replace Sheriff Richard Cutting.
Cutting has opted not to seek re-election this year.
Reynolds is the department’s chief deputy and major and has been with the agency since 1999.
Reynolds said in a news release that he hopes to increase training and focus law enforcement resources on drug abuse, domestic violence, child abuse and sexual abuse.
“We have a whole department of competent, professional deputies and correction officers,” he said in a news release. “I want to ensure that, as sheriff, I surround myself with good employees so that I can empower them through education and training to do their jobs effectively.”
“Short of Sheriff Cutting running again, there is no one in Essex County with greater experience and commitment than me,” Reynolds added.
He is the second candidate to publicly announce he will run for the post that Cutting is departing.
Essex County County Undersheriff Michael Badger also has announced he plans to run.

CORINTH — Police are investigating the theft of thousands of dollars from an automatic teller machine at the Tops Markets store on Main Street on Saturday.
Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo said a man was performing maintenance on the machine and had opened it when a man walked by, grabbed a stack of bills from the open machine and ran off.
Zurlo said $2,000 or so was believed stolen from the machine, and a felony grand larceny charge was likely when an arrest is made.
Anyone with information in the case is being asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 885-6761.
The Warren County Conservative Committee has recommended the Glens Falls Common Council choose Bennet Driscoll to fill the vacant Glens Falls 5th Ward supervisor post.
The supervisor position was left vacant when Matthew MacDonald resigned for reasons related to his full-time job. MacDonald recommended Robert Stedman, an independent, to fill the spot.
Driscoll is a former Glens Falls Common Council member and Warren County Planning Board member who unsuccessfully ran against MacDonald on the Conservative and Democratic lines.
"Bennet Driscoll undoubtedly has the ethics and expertise to serve as Ward 5 supervisor," the Conservative Committee wrote in a press release. "His past service to the City of Glens Falls Common Council and various city boards speaks volumes of his character and achievements."
Glens Falls Mayor Dan Hall said the council will interview candidates later this month.
