Lake George

Visitors walk along Lake George's lakefront walkway in September as the Lake George Steamboat Company's Minne-Ha-Ha backs away from the dock. Money magazine, in listing Lake George as a top destination, mentions several local attractions, including lake cruise ships.

LAKE GEORGE — Lake George ranked eighth in Money magazine’s list of the best travel destinations for 2018.

The magazine ranked communities on the basis of several criteria, including the cost of air fare, hotel prices and the type of amenities, including historic sites and cultural attractions.

It also included other factors such as walkability and crime rates.

The average hotel night cost was $151 and the average air fare was $439, according to the magazine.

It would cost two people just shy of $2,600 to spend a week in Lake George.

The write-up says the upstate haven “really comes alive during the summer months, when it draws visitors seeking greener surroundings and a small-town vibe.”

Steamboat excursions, ghost tours at the historic Fort William Henry Museum and a 6-mile round trip railbike tour are among the attractions the magazine cites.

The write-up also says people should treat themselves “with a visit to Adirondack Brewery, where you can pick up an IPA or seasonal specialties like hefeweizens and cucumber beers.”
