QUEENSBURY — The year was 1978. Disco was king, the first "Star Wars" film was barely a year old, and overalls, bell-bottoms and turtlenecks were fashion crazes. That year also marked a milestone moment for the Garvey Automotive brand.

It was in 1978 that the first Garvey automotive store, Garvey Volkswagen, opened for business.

Forty years and five new franchises later, Garvey Volkswagen is celebrating its 40th anniversary at its 483 Quaker Road location.

“It is hard to believe it’s been 40 years since my brothers, Marc and Peter, opened the very first Garvey dealership,” said Sean Garvey, owner and dealer principal of the Garvey Automotive Group, in a news release.

Volkswagen scheduled a visit by its regional vice president to the Garvey Volkswagen dealership for this week, at which Garvey Volkswagen was presented with an honorary plaque to commemorate the 40-year service achievement.

“Queensbury, Glens Falls, the Adirondacks … the North Country has been home to the Garvey family for decades. It’s where we’ve built our business, it’s where we’ve built our homes and our families,” said Marc Garvey, owner and dealer principal of the Garvey Automotive Group.
