Cayuga County has something fun for everyone this winter.

Even if the weather outside is frightful, visitors can still curl up for a cozy winter “hibercation” in central New York’s scenic Finger Lakes region. Sleep in and linger over breakfast in bed as the snow falls gently outside, then bundle up and venture out to explore the charming local lake towns with a romantic outdoor stroll, popping into a friendly winery or brewpub before dinner by the fireplace at an intimate restaurant.

All year long, the Finger Lakes region rolls out the welcome mat to couples, families and friend groups who are seeking a rejuvenating escape. This winter there’s even more reason to pay a visit as local businesses, hotels and restaurants have teamed up with the Cayuga County Office of Tourism to participate in a hibercation campaign running from Jan. 15 through March 15, 2022.

“It’s the perfect cure for cabin fever,” says Cayuga County office of tourism executive director Karen Kuhl. “We’re encouraging people to enjoy some guilt-free downtime while they escape the day-to-day pressures of work and home.”

Four regional hotels and inns are offering seasonal hibercation packages. Within easy walking distance of spa services just around the corner, Aurora Mainstays makes several properties available to guests at reduced rates on the village’s charming Main Street. At the northern tip of Skaneateles Lake, the beautifully decorated MacKenzie House welcomes hibercation visitors with a gift basket and coupons to redeem at local businesses.

Cayuga County's hibercation campaign starts January 15 and runs through March 15.

The Hilton Garden Inn in Auburn pampers hibercation guests with a bottle of wine, a continental breakfast and late checkout, while the quaint Inn at the Finger Lakes discounts rooms by 25% and provides a special gift for hibercation visitors.

Even if you’re not staying overnight, Cayuga County visitors can still take advantage of many hibercation activities and offers. Start the journey with a stroll through picturesque state parks or along local nature trails. Or get your blood pumping with more intense recreational pursuits such as snowshoeing, ice skating, cross-country skiing and ice fishing.

Enjoy the beautiful, nature-filled, wintery views of Cayuga County.

While browsing the shops and boutiques, stop into one of the region’s award-winning craft breweries for a little sampling. Summerhill Brewing in Locke offers half-price flights and buy-one, get-one flights for customers who mention the hibercation promotion, and Auburn’s Prison City Pub and Brewery allows visitors to assemble their own hibercation flight from a selection of specialty winter warmers.

Visitors are sure to work up an appetite, and local restaurateurs stand ready to provide plenty of delicious sustenance after you come in from the cold.

Cayuga County is full of fun for the whole family.

“Many restaurants will feature local brews and cozy down-home farm-to-table meals,” says Claire Dunlap, marketing manager for the Cayuga County Office of Tourism. “You’ll find many familiar favorite dishes on menus like shepherd’s pie, chili, hot cocoa and unique hot toddies to warm your belly and soul.”
