I had planned to visit my local sports bar on Saturday so I could see Glens Falls play for the state football title. But apparently, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association was not allowing the games to be televised. Instead it was charging $9.95 for online viewing.
Since my son was home, he managed to hook up the laptop to the television and I paid the $9.95. I was glad I did. After trailing 14-0 early, Glens Falls looked like it might be overmatched. Instead, it turned it around in the second quarter and went on to win the state title 55-32.
Just watching Joe Girard III scramble was worth the price.
As good as Glens Falls’ performance was on the field, I believe our sports folks coverage was its equal.
Sportswriter Pete Tobey provided four stories on the day of the game to give fans every possible angle of coverage on the game as well as an extensive statistical package on both teams. Few sports departments do it as well as ours.
On the day of the game, Pete provided the main story for the front page and an extensive game story on the front of the sports section while Ellis Williams summed up the championship – and JGIII’s career – with a superb column.
If you haven’t checked out the gallery of photos from the Carrier Dome from Jenn March, you should. She was also at the top of her game.
But none of it would happen without the great planning and execution of Sports Editor Greg Brownell back at the office. Nobody does it better.
It was a great weekend for the Glens Falls football team and for our sports folks.
