Lindy West's Shrill is a great book about two dreaded f-words: fat and feminism.

"Feminism is just a long slow realization that the stuff you love hates you" perfectly sums up how I feel about a lot of things, including my interest in hip-hop and even, sometimes, my career in sports.

Though I was firmly in the choir on many of the feminist issues there were some things I hadn't thought of before. While I have put thought into body issues, I have not really considered what it's like to be truly fat. West made me think of that. I'm not sure I disagreed with much before reading this, but I hadn't thought about it.

Bonus! We have chance to meet West in person when she does a reading at Northshire Bookstore on April 6 (tickets are $5 but are good for $5 off the book). The other stops on her tour are all major cities, so I for one am looking forward to go see her.

Also, Northshire's newest book club is meeting Monday at 5:30 p.m. to discuss Shrill for anyone interested.
