We all need a good laugh.
I don't know if I've ever barged into a Barnes and Noble and walked right to the Humor section. Until last week, that is.
Usually I like to peruse the Current Affairs, History, Philosophy and Cultural Studies sections. But my favorite author, the political satirist P.J. O'Rourke came out with a new book, so I called an audible.
I borderline jogged from the entrance of the Saratoga store directly to the Humor section. I was excited. I knew where on the shelf O'Rourke's books would be – because I had been there before – and sure enough there were five copies of his newest book How The Hell Did This Happen? The Election of 2016.
O'Rourke, a self-described libertarian-conservative is an equal opportunity offender in all of his political books, cracking jokes about anyone he can. And I'm expecting much of the same in this one. The cover features unflattering caricatures of many of the major presidential candidates from 2016 – Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Bernie Sanders, Carly Fiorina, Chris Christie, John Kasich, Ben Carson, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.
During my lunch break at the office yesterday – amid the Snowpocalypse – I decided to start the book. I'm only two short passages into it and he's already picked on Christie, Clinton, Sanders, Trump, George Pataki and many others.
In the author note from O'Rourke at the beginning of the book, he says he's looking to put a smile on the readers' face. That's what we need more of in this divisive political world: people who can laugh at themselves and others.
