The first installment of the New York State Sportswriters Association softball rankings are in. They can be seen in their entirety at this link.
Here's the summary for area and other Section II teams:
Class D -- Salem (5-0) is ranked No. 3 in the state -- thanks to their 6-5 win over six-time defending Section II champion Fort Ann in extra innings a two weeks ago. Fort Ann (5-1) is ranked seventh. The top two teams in the D's are Deposit (Section III) and Heuvelton (Section X).
Class C -- Greenwich (6-0) is ranked fourth in the state, but Section II is well-represented in the C's. Cambridge (4-0) is ranked 13th. Hoosic Valley is 16th and Ticonderoga (4-1) is 22nd. Among Section II clubs outside the Glens Falls area are Chatham (7th) and Duanesburg (9th). The top three teams are Elmira Notre Dame and Edison of Section IV, and Caledonia-Mumford (Section V), in that order.
Class B -- Section II has a few teams ranked in the top 20 -- Schalmont is No. 6, Cohoes is 10th, Ichabod Crane is 11th and Hoosick Falls is 17th.
Class A -- South Glens Falls (8-1) is ranked 14th despite its strong start and one loss to Class AA Shaker in a tournament Sunday. The Bulldogs are ranked behind last year's Section II finalists: No. 6 Burnt Hills and No. 8 Averill Park.
Class AA -- Returning state semifinalist Ballston Spa is ranked eighth in the state, while Colonie is No. 4. Shenendehowa is ranked 21st.
