We're gearing up for the last full week of the regular season for area high school softball -- the Section II playoff seedings meeting is set for May 17 -- so there are still teams with a lot of games to cram in between now and then.
Some league races are coming down to the wire:
-- Monday (today) I am heading over to Schuylerville for the Foothills Council North Division showdown between South Glens Falls and Schuylerville. South High won the first meeting 1-0 on April 13. The Bulldogs are 10-0 in the league (13-1 overall), while the Black Horses are 9-1 (11-3 overall).
-- According to my records, Glens Falls and Hudson Falls are both 5-4, while Queensbury is 5-6. I may be missing a game or two from Hudson Falls, however.
-- I have heard that the Foothills Council championship game is Thursday at a site to be announced. The North Division champ (either South Glens Falls or Schuylerville) faces the South Division champ, and since I have heard little to nothing about the South this season, I have no idea who that may be -- likely either Scotia or Amsterdam.
-- With the early decision to scrap the East-West division setup and play one 11-game schedule through the league once, there is no Adirondack League championship game this week.
-- That being said, Salem is the team on top of the Adirondack right now, with the Generals sitting at 8-0 in the league, 12-0 overall. Fort Ann (7-1, 9-1) remains right behind, as is Warrensburg (6-1, 7-3). Lake George (6-2, 9-2) and Corinth (5-3, 7-5) are not far behind.
-- Salem plays at Warrensburg in an Adirondack League showdown Monday (today), while Fort Ann takes on Lake George. Those are really the last big games of the regular season for those teams.
-- Greenwich is on top of the league with its 12-0 record, 15-1 overall following its sweep of Saratoga Springs and Mayfield in the Saratoga Tournament on Saturday.
-- Last week, the Witches turned in impressive results, beating Hoosic Valley 4-1 and then taking a doubleheader sweep from Hoosick Falls. Greenwich should be well-regarded in the sectional seedings in a very stacked Class C.
-- Cambridge has slipped to 4-3 in the league and overall -- according to my records -- after losing twice to Greenwich on April 27-28, then to Hoosic Valley last week. I have not seen any results from the Indians since May 1.
-- Hoosic Valley is 8-4 in the league, 10-4 overall following a sweep of struggling Waterford last week.
-- Hoosick Falls has slipped to 4-5, 5-6, and behind Saratoga Catholic (5-4, 7-4) in the Wasaren standings.
-- I have not seen enough results from Mechanicville, Stillwater and Tamarac to even hazard a guess at their records. Tamarac was 2-6 at last count.
-- Ticonderoga has cruised to an 8-0 mark in the league, 9-2 overall. The Sentinels once again have quite a collection of talent -- could there be another run at the Class C state final four this season?
-- Getting results from the South Division is spotty at best, but Bolton-Schroon Lake is 5-0 in the league, 5-3 overall and battling with Johnsburg (4-0, 4-1 at last check, but that's a best-guess) for the division title.
