Cohoes' John McKnight breaks for a touchdown despite Joe Girard III's tackle attempt during a 2015 night game at Glens Falls High School. Cohoes did not field a varsity team in 2016, but returns to the varsity level this season against Class D teams as it tries to rebuild its program.

Cohoes has rejoined the varsity ranks in Section II football after spending 2016 at the JV level.

According to the school's website and a new Section II schedule released Aug. 4, the Tigers will play five games against Class D opponents as they try to rebuild their football program. Cohoes is a Class B school, but has struggled with low numbers over the last few seasons. The Tigers had previously played in Class B Reinfurt.

Cohoes will fill an open date for Whitehall, Canajoharie, Hoosic Valley, Helderberg Valley and Warrensburg, in weeks 1, 3, 4, 5 and 8, respectively. Cambridge, Rensselaer and Fort Edward had already filled their open dates with opponents from Section I on weeks 2, 6 and 7. Cohoes coach Rob Wattsman said in an email that those dates may be filled with games against out-of-section opponents.

Cohoes and Class C Helderberg Valley (Berne-Knox/Duanesburg merger) are both playing down in Class D this season.

Cohoes' 2017 schedule:

Sept. 2 -- Whitehall at Cohoes, 1 p.m.

Sept. 15 -- Cohoes at Canajoharie, 7 p.m.

Sept. 23 -- Cohoes at Hoosic Valley, 1 p.m.
