Fresh off his third state championship, and a state-record fifth one for Fort Ann, Dane Clark has decided to retire as baseball coach of Fort Ann.
Clark has been coaching since 1997, all but three seasons coming with the baseball team, which has numerous Adirondack League titles, seven Section II, Class D titles and three state titles in 2010, 2013 and 2017. According to the Section II baseball handbook, figuring in this year's mark, his career record is 281-91.
I'll miss interacting with Dane. Even in the most worrisome on-field moments -- and this year's seventh inning in the state championship game ranks high on that list -- he was the picture of calmness, and that carried over to his team. Dane understood that baseball was just a small part of the picture, and that education mattered most, but the lessons on the field could carry over to the life he and others were trying to prepare the players for.
Enjoy that grandchild, Dane, and enjoy a little more time to yourself. You've earned it.
