A little bit of alumni news this morning. Queensbury's Brittany La Plant earned Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors this week playing for Division I Rutgers.
La Plant scored the only goal of Rutgers' 1-0 victory over Ohio State on a second-effort from inside the box in the 83rd minute. It was her third goal of the season and the fifth of her career.
Rutgers is ranked 25th in the nation in the United Soccer Coaches Poll. The Scarlet Knights are 10-2-4.
Wednesday's soccer (corrected): This entry had originally reported that Greenwich defeated Waterford. That turned out to be wrong. Waterford was a 1-0 winner over the Witches. It's difficult tracking down scores from distant places during sectionals and we use a variety of sources to get this, and this one turned out to be wrong.
Charts: Click here for the link to our sectional charts. Updated, as always, late at night after all the games have taken place.
State rankings: They were posted on Wednesday night. Click here for the link.
Lake George fell to seventh in Class C. Schuylerville is 10th in Class B; Fort Ann is 12th in Class D. Reading between the lines, it looks like seedings figured into the way teams were ranked. I guess that makes some sense, although I've often said they should stop bothering with polls this time of year. It'll all get decided on the field.
Indirect kicks: A couple of game times for Saturday's Class B action — Schuylerville's home game will be a 5 p.m. start; Mechanicville will kick off at 6 p.m. ... Thank goodness the girls play all games in each class on the same day. Trying to keep the boys tournament sorted out is for the birds. ... Our final weekly prep stats run in Friday's paper. ... If things work out I'll drop by South High's game at Burnt Hills today. According to the weather report, a short-sleeved shirt would be in order. How long can we keep this going?
