Teams within the Foothills Council, Adirondack League, the CVAC and Wasaren League are ranked in the state and considering I haven't talked about it all year, I figured I should show some love to those teams that cracked the top 20 (and a few honorable mentions).
In Class A, Queensbury (10-4), Amsterdam (9-3) and Gloversville (9-4) all received honorable mention votes.
In Class B, Glens Falls (12-2) is ranked tenth. The Indians meet Amsterdam on Jan. 30 at Amsterdam High School. Glens Falls beat the Rams 86-76 earlier in this season.
In Class C, Lake George (15-0) remains atop the class standings since claiming the top spot right after Christmas. Hoosick Falls (8-4) comes in at No. 9, followed by No. 11 Spa Catholic, No. 15 Granville (10-2) and No. 18 Ticonderoga (11-3)
Finally in Class D, Whitehall (9-3) is ranked 16th and Argyle (10-3) is No. 18.
Lufkin sets new career-high, Backus scores 1,000th point
Monday night Argyle beat Hadley-Luzene 78-65. Peyton Lufkin, who is averaging 31.5 points per game, scored a career-high 47 points. He knocked down 20 of his 23 free throws.
In the same game, Connor Backus, who finished with a team-high 20 points, netted his 1,000th point.
“He lives for basketball and has been on varsity since the tail end of his ninth grade year,” Eagles coach Gary Wilson said. “He has been a good teammate throughout. This has not been focal point for him but it is a nice honor because he has worked hard.”
After pouring in 58 points in a 104-65 win over Hudson Falls on Friday, Joseph Girard III took an unofficial visit to the University of Connecticut and watched No. 1 Villanova beat the Huskies.
Girard visited Boston College in December, had St. John’s assistant coach Greg St. Jean attend a home recent home game and was on campus at Syracuse University earlier this month.
He is 93 points away from breaking current Indiana Pacers guard Lance Stepehenson’s all-time New York State record of 2,946 points. Currently averaging 49.8 points per game, Girard is on pace to become the state’s all-time leading scorer on January 30 when Glens Falls visits Amsterdam.
