Aaron Woolf, the 21st Congressional District Democratic candidate in 2014, urged Matt Funiciello, the Green Party candidate, to enter the 2016 Democratic primary in the 21st District.

"Matt Funiciello's 2014 Green Party candidacy in the NY 21st, like that of Bernie Sanders current (presidential) run, generated attention and participation, and now Funiciello has the chance to follow Sanders' example and bring that energy to a more prominent stage -- one with real possibility of advancement -- by seeking the 2016 Democratic line as well," Woolf wrote in an op ed essay submitted to The Post-Star on Monday.

The Post-Star will be publishing the essay in its entirety at a later date.

Woolf, a filmmaker from Elizabethtown, has contributed $1,000 to the campaign of Mike  Derrick, a retired Army colonel from Peru who is seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-Willsboro, in 2016. But Woolf has not endorsed Derrick.

Funiciello has said he intends to run again in 2016.
