U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-Willsboro, on Wednesday announced that she and Rep. Mimi Waters, R-Calif., organized a bipartisan group of 29 second-term House members that wrote to House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., urging "fast track consideration" of legislation to permanently repeal the federal excise tax on medical devices.

"It is critical that the House act to repeal this tax so the medical device industry, which includes hundreds of small businesses, has the certainty it needs to continue its research and development in these life-saving innovations," the group wrote.

The legislation had 245 co-sponsors, as of Wednesday -- 215 Republicans and 30 Democrats -- more than enough votes necessary to pass the House.
