U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik, R- Willsboro, on Jan. 4 introduced legislation to exempt student loan payments made from 529 college savings plans from a 10 percent penalty, according to the Library of Congress government information web site.

A 529 account is a federal-authorized tax deferred savings plan for college expenses.

The legislation -- HR 283 -- did not have any co-sponsors, as of Thursday.
