U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., said she will recruit Rep.-elect Elise Stefanik, R-Willsboro, for the Congressional Women’s Softball Team.

“I will make that offer immediately,” said Gillibrand, co-captain of the team that plays an annual game against women journalists to raise money for breast cancer research.

Gillibrand said she called Stefanik after the election and left a message congratulating her on her win in the 21st Congressional District, where Rep. Bill Owens, D-Plattsburgh, did not seek re-election.

“I told her it’s very exciting to have a woman from our region, a young woman, be the youngest woman in Congress ever,” Gillibrand said, speaking with reporters after a military medal presentation at American Legion Post 574 in Hudson Falls. “I think it’s very exciting. I think this is a region that very much readily supports our bipartisan candidates, and I look forward to working with her.”
