An environmental group that is challenging the state's efforts to widen trails in the Adirondacks so they are better fitted for snowmobile use won a major victory in court on Friday.

The Appellate Division of state Supreme Court upheld a preliminary injunction that halted tree cutting for a trail in Newcomb and Minerva, the injunction based on a lawsuit filed by Protect the Adirondacks! The lawsuit claims the work violates the "forever wild" provision for the state forest preserve.

Protect! has a writeup on its website that provides background and a picture of a widened trail. The DEC had not announced its next legal step as of Friday afternoon.
