Canal fishing

Nate Egan, of Fair Haven, Vermont, with an auger, and Kyle White, of Fort Ann, enjoy ice fishing in front of Lock C9 of the Champlain Canal at Smiths Basin in Kingsbury in January 2017. An early arrival of winter weather has many thinking ice fishing already.

I saw a lot of pictures of smaller lakes and ponds iced over as of Friday morning, as this cold stretch has already resulted in many small waters buttoning up. Among them were Lake Luzerne as well as Round Pond in Queensbury.

Now no one in their right mind is wandering out onto this ice yet, but with more cold weather coming next week, it's not out of the question that some ponds might be walkable by next weekend.

The chatter on iceshanty.com, though, was about how this early cold is cooling off open water, which could result in early ice around the region if the pattern continues as forecast. (There were even some photos of people on ice in central New York!)

With the last couple of weeks of deer season in our region having gone very well thanks to the cold and snow, many sportsmen and women are already getting their ice fishing gear ready for winter. Now is the time to get ready, as before we know it, there will be good ice.
