The weather cooperated for Saturday's opening day of Southern Zone rifle season, and whitetails in much of the area are in the rut. It was a perfectly cold morning, with almost no wind. Bucks are on the move, and after a warm, slow fall, the time to put some meat in the freezer has arrived.

I've heard from a few guys who had luck over in Washington County yesterday morning, including a solid 8-pointer in the Shushan area, but today's windy, wet weather will not be beneficial to those who wanted a second day afield this weekend.

The forecast for Thanksgiving weekend looks pretty good though, with little chance of precipitation and cool temperatures until late Saturday.

It's hard to believe we are heading to late November already. Pretty soon we will be talking about ice fishing season.
