This run of super-cold weather we have been having has made for some of the best early ice fishing conditions around here in years.

All small to mid-sized waters have locked up,and waters like Schroon Lake, Brant Lake, Eagle Lake and others to the north are hosting plenty of anglers.

But those who want to access the deepwater areas of Lake George were still waiting as of Saturday.

Much of Lake George remained open as of Saturday, thanks to high winds that keep the topwater moving and don't allow the extreme cold to set in. But much of the south end, and most bays, are locked up, and the perch and laker action has been decent in spots. (There were reports that the Hearthstone campground gate was still closed as of Friday, and only a small section of the Million Dollar Beach lot has been plowed.)

Though The Outdoorsman Sport Shop has closed for the winter, Marc Mularz from Beach Road Bait & Tackle reached out last week to say that his shop will be open seven days a week once Lake George is frozen. Fish307 is also going strong for the winter.

If you're looking to keep up to date on local and regional ice fishing conditions and action, iceshanty.com is the place to go. Thousands of anglers weigh in on their outings, trends and all other topics related to the hardwater season.
