Opening lead: King of ♦
Yesterday’s column said that Bob
Hamman might be the best player
of all time. Another candidate for
that distinction is Eric Rodwell, now
living in Florida. Rodwell was South
in today’s deal.
West decided that his good trump
holding and easy opening lead choice

warranted a penalty double. It didn’t.
East overtook the king of diamonds
opening lead with the ace and shifted
to the jack of clubs. Rodwell won
with the king and cashed the ace of
spades. He then ruffed a diamond
in dummy and ruffed a spade back
to his hand. He cashed the queen
of clubs and then ruffed another
diamond in dummy.
Rodwell discarded his last diamond
on the ace of clubs and was down to
just five hearts left in his hand. West
had four hearts and the queen of
diamonds. Rodwell led a spade from
dummy and ruffed it with his five.
West over-ruffed with the nine and
led the queen of diamonds. It was
clear sailing at this point. Rodwell
ruffed the diamond with dummy’s
10 and under-ruffed in his hand. A
spade ruff with the seven of hearts
was over-ruffed by West with the
jack, but West had to lead a heart
into Rodwell’s ace-queen and the
doubled game contract was made.
Well played!
