Sightings

I have received a few questions, some from my game warden friend who moved south, about skunks that seem to have an orange color to their light stripes instead of the bright white we are used to. I have seen it as well and this young skunk digging grubs along the canal in Fort Miller shows it.

I wish I had a definitive answer but every source I have consulted just talks about “staining.” I do know the white hairs on a skunk pelt are particularly porous and were often dyed to make trim on garments, so perhaps they pick up environmental staining as easily.
