SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Race Course enters its final weekend Saturday with a pair of Grade I races featuring high quality, but short fields.
The Grade I, $350,000 Spinaway for 2-year-old fillies has a field of five, with the meet’s top two trainers battling for the win. The Todd Pletcher-trained Pure Silver is a narrow even-money favorite on the morning line in the 7-furlong race on the main track. Chad Brown sends out Separationofpowers at 6-5 on the morning line.
Pure Silver, 3 for 3 lifetime, won the Grade II Adirondack on Aug. 12 by 9 1/2 lengths. Separationofpowers broke her maiden at first asking on July 30 by 11 3/4 lengths.
The Grade I, $750,000 Woodward also has attracted five older runners — the low number not surprising due to the presence of the top-ranked horse in America, Gun Runner, a 2-5 morning-line favorite. Gun Runner was last seen winning the Grade I Whitney by 5 1/4 lengths.
Pletcher sends out an uncoupled pair to try to beat the favorite in the 1 1/8-mile race: Rally Cry and Neolithic. Rally Cry won the ungraded Alydar Stakes here on Aug. 6 by 8 3/4 lengths, while Neolithic followed two third-place showings in the Grade I Pegasus and Grade I Dubai World Cup with an allowance win at the Spa on Aug. 5 despite being seven-wide in the upper stretch.
The Grade III Saranac for 3-year-olds on the turf is on the undercard.
