WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -- Marcel Noebels scored his first AHL goal, but it was not enough to propel the Adirondack Phantoms to victory. The Phantoms dropped a 2-1 decision to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Saturday night.
The rookie scored the team’s only goal of the game, backhanding a rebound of Oliver Lauridsen’s slap shot from the point past goaltender Brad Thiessen to tie the game at 1-1.
Defenseman Brian Dumoulin responded for the Penguins, however. He beat goaltender Scott Munroe, who made 22 saves playing against his former team, on a centering pass from Brian Gibbons in what proved to be the game-winner.
The Penguins are among the conference leaders in fewest shots allowed — only Syracuse and Albany have allowed fewer — and they stuck to that reputation in their first game against the Phantoms. Adirondack’s 23 shots was the third-fewest it has had in a game this season.
The Phantoms had only one shot through the first 14 minutes of the third period. They came on stronger to close out the period with six total shots, but couldn’t get the job done despite a two-man advantage on a power play with 27 seconds to play after pulling Munroe at 1:15. Defenseman Brandon Manning ripped off a hard shot from the point, but it was wide and the Phantoms couldn’t recover to get a shot on goal.
