The ECHL announced Tuesday that its board of governors has approved several changes for the league for the 2018-19 season.
It approved the expansion membership application for St. John's, Newfoundland. The team will be owned by Deacon Investments LTD, an entity controlled by Dean MacDonald. Glenn Stanford, the long-time president of the city's AHL franchise, will oversee team operations.
St. John's will join the other expansion team, the Maine Mariners, in the North Division next season. The North Division will consist of Adirondack, Brampton, Maine, Manchester, Reading, St. John's and Worcester.
Wheeling, a member of the North Division this season, will move to the Central Division.
Also, Quad City will not field a team next season.
