SOUTH GLENS FALLS — Amya Naja scored back-to-back goals in the second half that gave South Glens Falls a chance to share first place.

Now the Bulldogs will have to wait to see what happens on Friday.

The Bulldogs’ 3-2 victory on Wednesday gave them a 9-3 Foothills Council record, the same as their opponent, Queensbury. Schuylerville is still ahead of both of teams in the North Division with a 10-2 record.

Schuylerville meets Queensbury on Friday and needs a win or a tie to claim the North Division outright. If Queensbury wins, and if South High beats Hudson Falls in its final game, all three teams will finish 10-3.

Queensbury was up 1-0 at halftime after Christina Cummings’ goal. It’s not the first time the Bulldogs have played from behind this year.

“We’re been really good at that this year; we’ve been good at coming back from goals,” Naja said.

The counterattack was the Bulldogs’ friend in the second half. Naja scored twice by breaking through the middle of the field, and Jess Winslow made it a 3-1 game a bit later on by booting a ball under the cross bar.

“We’ve been a direct team all year,” South High coach Stephen Philo said. “(Naja) gets the ball on her foot and she wants to go, go, go. She’s good at it. ... We definitely created more chances in the second half than in the first.”

Brigid Duffy scored in the final minute for Queensbury, but Karlee Taber stopped a few other shots in goal as South High improved to 9-4-1 overall.

“She made some big saves, as she’s done all year long,” Philo said. “She’s a senior, and she came through on Senior Night.”

Philo said Wednesday was an improvement on some of the team’s earlier performances.

“We haven’t quite played a full 80 minutes yet, but we played a solid 60,” Philo said. “We still have some lapses here and there, but it’s better than the last several games where we played 40 minutes great, then wouldn’t show up for the next 40.”

Queensbury fell to 10-4-1 overall, and now needs to get ready for Friday’s Foothills finale against Schuylerville.

“We’re excited to play on Friday,” coach Jason Tenner said. “It’s a little sting for tonight, tomorrow morning, but by practice (Thursday) we’ll be focused on the final game of the season.”
