BOLTON — Only in the final minute of a dark and gloomy afternoon on Wednesday was Lake George able to lock up the Adirondack League girls soccer title.
Bolton-Warrensburg tied the game late in regulation, but Sarah Kohls scored in the last minute of the second overtime, giving the Warriors a 2-1 victory. Lake George claimed its second straight outright Adirondack title and its 26th straight league win.
The Warriors came into the game 12-0 in the league and had outscored opponents 95-4. They took a 1-0 lead in the first half on Logan Marie Clarke’s goal.
But Bolton-Warrensburg, playing with defender Madelyn Pratt switched into the midfield and Caitlyn Speranza moved to the back, kept Lake George from putting away the game.
“Their defense was very strong,” Lake George coach Steve Kohls said. “Caitlyn Speranza had a fantastic game and really shut our offense down a bit.”
Late in the second half, Chelsea Speranza sent a ball to the middle that Pratt fired into the goal for a 1-1 tie. The Warriors had to regroup quickly for overtime.
“We’re resilient enough, and we’ve played in enough close games, I knew we were going to get our best effort out of the kids,” Steve Kohls said. “I just wanted us to keep playing our game.”
Sarah Kohls headed in a corner kick by Gabby Marchello in the 100th minute to avoid what would have been a disappointing tie.
Bolton-Warrensburg fell to 10-2-1 despite its best effort of the season.
“I’ve never been more proud of them this season,” Bolton-Warrensburg coach Margaret Lawrence said. “It really makes me feel like we’re ready to compete in sectionals.”
