ARGYLE On his first shot of the second quarter, Berlin’s Ryan Willis hit a 3-pointer for his 1,000th point. The game was stopped, Willis was honored and the game went on.

The break in the action triggered a seven-minute stretch where every shot seemed to go in for both teams, but specifically for Argyle guard Peyton Lufkin.

Lufkin poured in 14 of his career-high 37 points and the Scots beat Berlin 68-57 in the conclusion of the Argyle Booster Club boys basketball tourney.

“He is a streaky shooter,” Argyle coach Jack Sherwin said. “Peyton felt like he had to take over.”

Berlin scored only nine points in the first quarter but following Willis’ milestone, the Mountaineers dropped 19 points in second quarter and trailed 38-28 at half.

Andrew Facin, Argyle’s second-leading scorer, left the game in the second quarter with an ankle injury. Lufkin picked up the scoring load by adding another 13 points in the third quarter.

“Andrew makes the team go with his defense,” Sherwin said. “He complements Peyton very well so I am concerned about the kid who got hurt.”

Willis tried to spark a Berlin comeback after halftime when he cut Argyle’s lead to eight on a euro step layup. On the Mountaineers’ next possession, Willis hit a deep 3-pointer. But Lufkin scored the Scots’ next 12 points and pushed Argyle’s lead to 16 to end the third quarter.

Finishing with a team-high 28 points, Willis said Berlin got outrebounded which provided Argyle too many second chance opportunities. On two different occasions in the second half, Lufkin missed a 3-point shot only to have a teammate grab an offensive rebound and kick it back out to him for the open look, which he made.

Though Willis would have liked to score his 1,000th point at his home gym and in a winning effort, he still will cherish the memory.

“It’s very sensational,” Willis said. “My entire career I’ve been looking for 1,000th points and it actually happened tonight. It is a dream come true.”

Earlier in the day, Ticonderoga beat North Warren 80-36 behind Evan Graney’s 34-point effort.
