BROADALBIN — Joseph Girard III poured in 46 points Friday night to lead the Glens Falls boys basketball team to an 89-49 victory over Broadalbin-Perth in the Foothills Council opener for both teams.

With his big night, Girard moved his career scoring total to 2,203 points, leapfrogging over four former players — including his father — into fifth place on the all-time Section II scoring list. Joe Girard Jr. had scored 2,179 points in his career at St. Mary’s of Glens Falls and Shenendehowa.

“My dad brought it up — I didn’t understand how close I was,” said Joseph Girard, who drained seven 3-pointers on Friday. “So I beat my dad today, but we were just trying to win the game — we wanted to score a lot of points and get down and dirty on defense, and we did both.”

Trent Girard, one of four Girard cousins on the Indians, scored 16 points and Justin Holness added 10 for Glens Falls.

“(B-P) came out with a double-team on him, so we tried a couple things to work through that, we set some double screens for him,” Indians head coach Rob Girard said. “His teammates helped him out a lot and that helped him relax a bit. Everyone knows their role on the team and he trusts them.”

Rob Girard was impressed with his team’s performance, considering it was their first time out with an almost completely new set of starters, after graduating four senior mainstays in June.

“It was our first time out, period — with football season going late, we were unable to scrimmage, so I was curious to see how we would do,” he said.

“Last week, we were bummed, we still wanted to be at the (Carrier) Dome playing football,” Joseph Girard said, “but the whole week leading up this game, we were so excited to be out on the court. Putting up that many points, it shows that we have a big future ahead of us this year.”
