LAKE GEORGE -- The Lake George Fighting Spirit scored three straight second-period goals Saturday to earn a spot in the championship game of the Northern States Junior Hockey League playoffs.
Blake Tarbell, Joseph Sargeant and Ryan Chauvin scored as the Spirit overcame a one-goal deficit to beat the Eastern Kodiaks 3-2 on Saturday in the semifinals at the Lake George Forum. The Syracuse Stampede won Saturday’s other semifinal, beating the Cape Cod Islanders 5-0.
The Fighting Spirit will host Syracuse in the championship of the NSHL Cup on Sunday at 5 p.m. at the Forum.
Nate DelGiudice stopped 25 shots in goal for the win, making him 20-0 this season. The Spirit, who won the Junior A league’s regular-season title, are 38-4-1 overall.
The Eastern Kodiaks scored the first goal of Saturday’s semifinal early in the second period, but the Fighting Spirit responded with three unanswered goals. Tarbell scored on a power play 7:55 into the period. Sargeant scored on an assist from Queensbury graduate Andrew Crist at 13:16, and Chauvin scored the team’s third goal less than two minutes later.
The Spirit have already earned a trip USA Hockey’s Tier III National Championships in Las Vegas, based on their regular-season finish. Syracuse will also represent the NSHL in that tournament, April 5-9.
