STILLWATER -- Josh Keyes turned on the jets Saturday night against the best defense in Section II.
In the end, Keyes racked up 312 yards and four touchdowns by himself, leading Chatham to a 31-14 Class C semifinal football victory over Cambridge at Stillwater High School.
The undefeated Panthers (9-0) play for the Section II title against Hoosick Falls (9-0) on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Stillwater, in a rematch of the 2006 Class C final.
Playing in wet conditions, Chatham had rallied from a 14-7 first-quarter deficit, with Keyes scoring the go-ahead touchdown with 24 seconds left in the half to take a 19-14 halftime lead.
"We knew it was going to be a game," said Chatham head coach Mark Dwyer, whose team had not played in a game closer than 21 points all season. "We hadn't been pushed all year. They got ahead of us and the kids rallied from being pushed. I was happy to see that."
The Indians, who finished the season at 7-2, had few answers for Keyes. Their swarming defense worked occasionally, as the junior standout was held to little or no gain several times in his 35 carries.
However, Keyes broke loose for scoring runs of 37, 1, 11 and 32 yards, and Ryan Coon added another 137 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. As a team, Chatham finished with 529 yards total offense.
"They made the little plays and the big plays, and physically, they handled us," Cambridge head coach Doug Luke said. "Their line was better. A good line makes it easy for any back. (Keyes) hit the hole and exploded a few times."
Keyes' go-ahead score just before halftime was the momentum-changer. Chatham had taken over the ball at its own 1-yard line, and got a second-effort lunge from Keyes for a first down on a third-and-three situation deep in Panther territory. From there, Keyes took off on a 45-yard run, and a 31-yard Tanner Niles-to-Ian McGrath completion set up Keyes' 11-yard scoring run on a double-handoff inside.
"We took that play from Cambridge two years ago, the B-counter," Dwyer said. "Our offensive line controlled the line; they give us just a seam, and let our backs hit the hole."
"(Keyes) fighting for that extra few inches changed the game right there," Luke said. "It's a game of inches, and that was a big play. We stop them there, we're up 14-13 at the half. No question, that touchdown before the half deflated us."
The Indians never got things together in the second half. After going 5 for 11 despite rain-swept conditions in the first half, senior quarterback Kyle Parmenter was 1 for 12 in the second with two interceptions.
As a team, Cambridge was held to 53 yards on 14 rushes, forcing the Indians to rely on Parmenter's arm. Parmenter finished the game 6 of 23 for 145 yards, with two touchdowns.
"We had people open, but we dropped too many passes," Luke said. "We hit a couple early, but we stalled later on. Those dropped passes killed our drives."
Chatham finished the scoring in the third quarter, on Keyes' final touchdown run and a 61-yard scoring sprint by Coon. The Indians turned the ball over on downs at the Chatham 9-yard line near the end of the period, and never threatened again.
Cambridge had taken a 14-7 lead in the first quarter on a pair of scoring strikes by Parmenter, who connected with Matt Best for 55 yards and Jesse Lybert for 39 - the latter score coming right after a fumble recovery by Brady Lebarron.
The Panthers pulled within 14-13 on Keyes' 1-yard touchdown in the second quarter, but a bad snap cost them the PAT.
"After last season, this was an improvement, we got back where we're supposed to be," Luke said. "We just ran into a better team."
