Akeson plays big part in Phantoms' road win

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- The Adirondack Phantoms bounced back from a loss to Albany on Friday with a 3-2 shootout win over the Devils on Sunday, helped by a big performance from Jason Akeson.

Akeson had a goal, an assist and then led the Phantoms off with a shootout goal in the game, played at at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall.

Adirondack took the game’s first lead on a power play, as Akeson’s pass was deflected off an Albany defenseman into the goal. The Devils answered in the second period with their own power-play goal. Matt Anderson set up Phil DeSimone for a shot from inside the right face-off circle.

Marcel Noebels scored for the Phantoms in the third period off the assist from Akeson, but Albany came back again five minutes later to tie the game.

The Phantoms won the shootout session 3-1 with goals from Akeson, Tye McGinn and Danny Syvret, improving to 17-19-1-1 on the season. Anderson scored for Albany.

Adirondack’s Cal Heeter earned the victory in goal by stopping 25 of 27 shots. He improved to 7-11-1.

Brandon Manning returned to the lineup for the Phantoms after missing the end of Friday’s game and all of Saturday’s game with sickness.

For the weekend, Adirondack went 2-1, also defeating Worcester 2-1 on Saturday.
