Editor:

Councilman Doug Irish, who serves on the Queensbury Town Board, as well as chairman of the Queensbury Republican Committee, the man who would bring up controversial topics, speak his mind and argue with members of the Town Board, has not attended a town meeting since July 3.

Mr. Irish has been in Fayetteville, North Carolina working in a local community college. In a Post-Star article dated Aug. 28, Mr. Irish stated, “He will be able to attend every meeting beginning Sept. 25.” Not only did Mr. Irish not show for the Sept. 25 meeting, he failed to show for the Oct. 2 meeting as well.

Mr. Irish, however, has been consistently collecting his annual salary of $18,000 with no problems or interruptions. Mr. Irish in the same Aug. 28 article is quoted as saying if he can’t get to meetings soon, “I will most likely resign.”

The Republican Party, the party of Ronald Reagan and Abraham Lincoln, the party known for “fiscal conservatism,” sits idly and allows this to occur. Those in office and those running for town office, many of whom tout “conservative values” and watching out for the local taxpayer, are obviously paying lip service and pandering to the voters, past and present.

New York Public Officers Law addresses the issue regarding “Creation of Vacancies.” Section four of the New York Law states “a vacancy is created when an individual ceases to be an inhabitant of the state.” His office under the law is “officially vacant.”

Mr. Irish and those closely surrounding him and protecting him remind me of the Wizard of Oz. The Scarecrow, a lack of brains, the Tin Man, a lack of heart and the Cowardly Lion, a lack of courage.

P. Brent McDevitt, Queensbury
