Once again, Americans are shocked and saddened by the senseless, cruel murder of innocent persons, this time of Florida students. How many more people will lose their lives because our U.S. government allows anyone to own deadly weapons of all kinds, including semi-automatic guns?
I want to commend you, Mr. Tingley, for the excellent column on Feb. 19 documenting that according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 1.5 million Americans have suffered gun-related deaths in the past 50 years since 1968. That statistic is “mind-boggling.”
I ask myself, “What can I as an ordinary citizen do to stop this terrible carnage?” I think what we should do is everybody who is concerned write letters to all our elected representatives, local, state and federal and tell them we want strict gun laws, ideally to eliminate all these “murder weapons.” Buck the NRA!
I wonder if members of the NRA lost a child murdered in school if they might change their attitude concerning gun ownership. I’m not wishing this tragedy on anyone, as I can’t imagine the terrible sorrow of families who have lost a child or an older loved one.
