GLENS FALLS -- The Charles R. Wood Theater board of directors on Tuesday announced that Executive Director William Woodward has retired, effective immediately, as he undergoes cancer treatment.

“Bill’s spirit and outgoing personality, along with his desire to make the Wood accessible to the whole community for all ages, has helped welcome over 30,000 people per year to the theater ...,” a press release stated. “He has maintained a strong fiscal blueprint with the financial committee of the facility, resulting in the theater having no debt.”

The press release states that Woodward was diagnosed with follicular lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system, in 2009, and he “needs to continue on a medical regime to stabilize his health.”

Woodward was hired as interim director in September 2006, and hired as director two months later.

The board of directors will conduct a national search for a replacement.

    Bill,
    You will be so missed!
You've created such a friendly atmosphere at the theater.
I loved seeing you standing in the lobby before and after the shows. It was like coming home.
I don't think anyone will be able to take your place in that respect.
There is only one Bill Woodward!
I'm so sorry that you haven't been well and have had to fight illness.
Hope you will have a good recovery and will stay well.
Thank you for being so approachable and friendly.
I hate to see you go.
    I'll be thinking of you.
    Warmly,
    Joy xoxox
PS-Thanks for doing so much for the Wood Theater. I love it!
