WEST PAWLET, Vt. -- Vermont State Police said Thursday that the man who died in a weekend fire at a general store has been identified as a Pawlet man.
Gary Cary, 59, was trapped inside an adjacent storage building as Dutchie's Store caught fire around 4 a.m. Saturday. The store's owners escaped.
Police said the cause of the fire has not been determined, but it is not considered suspicious. It apparently started in the storage building next to the store, and Cary's body was found in that storage building.
Officials said Cary had been working at a farm in Rupert, Vt., and it was unclear why he was in the adjacent building on the morning of the fire.
A benefit dinner and auction to help the owners will be held April 10 at the West Pawlet fire station.
