SALEM - A 21-year-old man died early Sunday morning after being thrown from a vehicle during an accident, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

Matthew Mumley, of 20 Newman Road, was riding with Mark Whitman, 20, of the same address, around 3:50 a.m. on County Route 61 in Jackson when the eastbound car went off the road after rounding a curve, police said.

Whitman corrected the vehicle back onto the highway, causing the car to slide off the south side of the highway and overturn, ejecting Mumley, police said.

The Cambridge Valley Rescue Squad transported both men to Southern Vermont Medical Center, where Mumley died from the injuries he sustained in the crash, police said.

An investigation is still underway, but it has been determined that Whitman was speeding and Mumley was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

Deputies Travis Earl and Tim Carroll, Investigator Terry Markham and Sgt. Nick Spiezio investigated the accident. Police were assisted at the scene by the Shushan and Cambridge fire departments.
