PUTNAM - Tom Eliopoulos sells lots of things on eBay, but this week he has been selling actual lots.
Eliopoulos had listed his Blythewood Estates mansion on the auction Web site with a starting bid of about $3.25 million. The auction closed Tuesday, with no bidders.
"That's OK," Eliopoulos said during a telephone interview from northern New Jersey. "It's one of the nicest homes on Lake George. A prime piece of property - you can't beat it."
Eliopoulos hesitated at first to talk about the auction or give an interview. He said he had owned the home for 25 years, but now with his two children in college, he hardly uses the property anymore.
He is also trying to sell 93 acres of land located at Glenburnie Road and Route 22 South on eBay. He's asking for $439,000 for the property, which he said subdivides into 11 lots.
He has yet to receive any bids on that auction, either, and he's re-posted both properties on eBay.
"I do quite a bit of business on eBay," he said.
A textbook that Eliopoulos sold, "Magruder's American Government," went for $50 in September, according to his online auction profile.
Kim Rubey, an eBay spokeswoman, said real estate transactions are different from other online auctions. Such sales are not completed online because of complex laws regulating the real estate business from state to state, she said.
Real estate listings on eBay serve more as a means of advertising than actually selling, she said.
"With 248 million users around the world, this is a way to get exposure on a wider scale," Rubey said.
Blythewood Estate is located on two acres on the Skerry Point peninsula in Gull Bay.
The mansion was built between 1897 and 1902, according to the listing. It features 22 rooms, including 12 bedrooms, five brick fireplaces, a banquet room and boathouses.
Eliopoulos listed the property again on eBay Thursday morning. You can find the property by searching for Blythewood at www.ebay.com.
