QUEENSBURY — Pioneer Bank recently established its first branch north of Malta, and according to president and CEO Tom Amell, it likely will not be their last.
“Queensbury is a crown jewel for us,” said Amell, whose company opened a branch at 739 Upper Glen St., the former First Niagara building, earlier this year. “The Queensbury market gives us a tremendous opportunity in terms of deposit share.”
Amell said there is another advantage to his bank being in Queensbury. “There are a lot of small-business owners there, and this gives us access to them.”
Pioneer, which traces its history to 1889, has 22 branches and recently opened a new headquarters on Shaker Road in Albany.
It has been growing rapidly, opening seven branches since 2013. The Queensbury branch has four full-time employees.
“Our business model is focused on the customer,” Amell said.
Amell said there are no immediate plans for additional branches, but said the bank is looking at the Saratoga and Wilton region, as well as other sites.
