CLIFTON PARK — One person was killed Friday night in a structure fire on Merion Avenue in Clifton Park, according to Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office.
According to a news release, first responders were called to 2 Merion Ave. at 8:31 p.m. for the report of a structure fire.
Upon arrival, heavy smoke and fire was coming from an upstairs window and patrols were informed at least one person was believed to be in the house.
Members of the sheriff’s office and state police were unable to enter the residence due to the smoke and fire conditions.
After the fire was contained, it was confirmed a person was inside and was declared deceased. The individual was identified as 41-year-old Jason Powers. Powers lived with his mother who was not home at time of the fire.
According to Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office Investigation Unit and the County Cause and Origin Team, the fire started in his bedroom and was ruled accidental. An autopsy conducted Sunday determined Powers died of asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation.
The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office, State Police, Saratoga County Fire Cause and Origin Team, Jonesville Fire Department, Round Lake Fire Department, Clifton Park Fire Department and Vischer Ferry Fire Department responded to the scene.
