Officials were warning about potentially dangerous conditions on the ice of Great Sacandaga Lake because of fluctuating water levels.
Recent rains had caused the lake level to rise nearly 2.5 feet in places, with a rise of up to another foot possible in the coming days.
That could create issues with ice strength and water on top of ice, possible safety issues for ice fishers and snowmobilers.
The lake level is guided by water releases controlled by Hudson River-Black River Regulating District.
The Great Sacandaga Lake Fisheries Federation’s annual ice fishing contest is scheduled for Jan. 25, and hundreds of anglers are expected.
