FORT EDWARD — A Fort Edward man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly having sex with a girl under the age of 17, police said.
Richard M. Alger, 53, of 48 Mechanic St., is accused of having sexual intercourse with the girl, with whom he was acquainted, on July 16, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.
The incident is alleged to have happened during a boat ride on the Champlain Canal, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.
Alger was charged with third-degree rape, a felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.
The state’s age of consent for sexual relations is 17. The rape count alleges he had sex with someone too young to legally consent.
Alger was sent to Washington County Jail for lack of $1,000 cash or $5,000 bond bail.
Sheriff's Investigator Michael McWhorter handled the case.
