MOREAU — Firefighters responded Thursday morning to a fire in a two-story house on Route 9 just north of Toadflax Nursery.

Onlookers at the scene said smoke was pouring from the ground-floor windows and said no one was home at the time of the fire.

A Post-Star staffer observed heavy damage to the side of the home with melted siding, and the framework of the home was charred. More damage appeared to be in an extension of the house on the ground floor.

Firefighters sprayed hot spots in the small room and made their way upstairs to assess the structure.

The fire, which was called out at 9:52 a.m., caused traffic to be diverted from Route 9 northbound to Reservoir Road and southbound on Bluebird Road. The roadway has reopened as of 3 p.m., and firefighters remain on the scene.

South Glens Falls Fire Company, Wilton Fire Department, Gansevoort Volunteer Fire Department, Fort Edward Fire Department, West Glens Falls Fire Department and Hudson Falls Fire Department responded to the fire and were assisted by Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office and Moreau EMS.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and a Saratoga County fire investigator was called to the scene. A call into the South Glens Falls Fire Company for comment was not returned before deadline.
