WARRENSBURG -- A snowmobiler was killed Tuesday morning when he was struck by a falling tree.

Gary T. Clark, 50, of Comstock, was driving a 2005 Ski Doo snowmobile northeast on Viele Pond Road at about 11 Tuesday morning when he was hit by a tree that had been toppled by a man cutting firewood along the trail, according to the Warren County Sheriff's Office.

Michael S. Vernum, 31, of Lake Luzerne, was cutting firewood with two other people when Clark rounded a corner on the trail. They attempted to stop Clark, but the tree that Vernum had been cutting fell, striking Clark on the helmet and smashing against the snowmobile, the Sheriff's Office reported.

Clark was taken to Glens Falls Hospital, where he died, police reported.

Viele Pond road is a seasonal highway, closed from Dec. 1 through May 1, and is part of the South Warren Snowmobile Club Trail System.

Members of the Traffic Safety Unit and Criminal Investigations Unit are investigating, although no charges had been filed as of about 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The Luzerne Hadley Fire Department and Emergency Squad responded to the scene of the accident.

Mike Fazio, president of the South Warren Snowmobile Club, said the logger had been warned recently about blocking trails as he logged.

The club has a legal right of way from landowners for all of its trails.

Rest in peace my friend. This is such a tragedy. 50 is just too young. I will keep your family and friends in my prayers.
