November 1, 1933 — January 5, 2018
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — William Basil Purner, 84, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Jan. 5, 2018. He was born on Nov. 1, 1933 to Walter B. and Genevieve (Hart) Purner, the sixth of 11 children. The immediate family will be gathering for a private celebration of life in the home of his son, Jeff Purner, on the weekend of Jan. 12, 2018.
Bill was a graduate of Glens Falls High School and then he proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy and Army. He was honorably discharged in Dec. of 1959. The following year, he married the love of his life, Jean Esther Farr, on Aug. 21, 1960. They shared 57 wonderful years together. Over the past few years, the love and dedication he showed towards his wife, who is ill, was such an inspiration. His life selflessly revolved around her each day.
In his youth, Bill was an accomplished and talented swimmer, winning many races and awards in Glens Falls. He was also a lifeguard at Haviland’s Cove and the East Pool during his teen years.
Along with his parents, Mr. Purner was preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas, Walter and Richard Purner. Bill is survived by his wife, Jean Purner; three children, Jeff (Julie), James (Sharon) and Matt (Steven); five grandchildren, Tyler Purner, Emily Purner, Logan Purner, Lauren Purner and Alex Purner; three sisters, Elizabeth Pagano, Mary Kexel (Ronald) and Patricia Purner (Janice Niemer); four brothers, Robert, Paul (Diane), Raymond (Priscilla) and Francis Purner (Anne Marie); along with many in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of Jean Purner.
