QUEENSBURY -- Walter F. “Skip” Shangraw Jr., 81, passed away at his home, Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, after an eight-month struggle with cancer.

Skip was born March 26, 1931, in Glens Falls. He was the son of the late Walter and Edith (Wright) Shangraw.

He was a graduate of Glens Falls High School, Class of 1949, and Albany College of Pharmacy in 1954.

He owned and operated Shangraw’s Pharmacy until he closed it in the early ’80s. He then worked as a pharmacist for 10 years at Mt. McGregor before retirement.

Skip married Martha Klahn on June 20, 1953, in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Albany.

Skip was on the founding board of Voluntary Action,

a member of Warren, Washington Pharmaceutical Society.

Member of the First Presbyterian Church of Glens Falls, where he had served as a deacon, trustee and usher.

He loved to travel and enjoyed organizing and taking trips with family and friends, having traveled extensively in Europe, British Isles, Caribbean and British Columbia.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Joanne.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Martha Klahn Shangraw of Queensbury; two sons, Bob (Maura ) Shangraw of Lancaster, Pa., and Bill (Sooki) Shangraw of Mesa, Ariz.; and one daughter, Karen (Pete) Vis of Cumming, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Rob Shangraw of Philadelphia, Pa., Sara Shangraw of Washington D.C., Alyssa Shangraw of Albany, Hannah Shangraw of Oregon, Ann Marish Shangraw of Mesa, Ariz., William and Martina Vis of Cumming, Ga.; and also one niece, Julanne (Earl ) Sharrow.

At the family’s request, there are no calling hours scheduled.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, at the First Presbyterian Church of Glens Falls, with the Rev. John Barclay officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Skip’s memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or High Peaks Hospice, 79 Glenwood Ave, Suite 2, Queensbury NY 12801.

Arrangements are under the direction of Singleton Sullivan Potter Funeral Home, 407 Bay Rd. Queensbury.

    Really sorry to learn of Skip's passing. He and I were classmates at Glens Falls High School many years ago. I have long since left the area, but our high school years are still vivid memories for me. John Hay

    I knew Skip through my dad who maintained a friendship with him until his passing in 2000. Skip was a wonderful person who cared more about his customers then he did for himself. He always smiled and talked extensively about his friends and family. The Earth has lost a wonderful, Caring person and prayers go out to his family. RIP Skip...:(
